Amsterdam is a compact city that is awkward to drive in. The canal ring has few legal stopping points, trams and cyclists own most of the lanes, and Schiphol sits on the far side of the A10 ring from the old centre. Schiphol is a short run from the centre, but the last kilometre is where plans fall apart.
