For a few days each year the Croisette is lined with film, property, television and advertising professionals, and a short drive can take an hour. The rest of the year it is a resort for yachts, villas and lunches in Le Suquet. The Vieux Port, with its fishing boats and the Quai Saint-Pierre, is where ferries leave for the Lerins Islands of Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat. Inland, Mougins, Valbonne and Grasse, the perfume capital, are twenty to forty minutes away through winding roads. Along the coast, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins lie east, and Monaco is about forty-five minutes from Cannes on the A8 when it is clear. Saint-Tropez, west across the Esterel, can take an hour and a half in summer traffic. We choose the route on the day with live traffic.
July and August bring crowds, heat and coastal traffic. The A8 motorway is usually quicker than the Corniche, but it backs up at the Antibes exits and near Nice. The scenic Corniche d'Or through the Esterel to Saint-Raphael is spectacular and slow. We advise on timing, and for Saint-Tropez we generally suggest an early start or a late return.
