Riga is the largest city in the Baltics, and it is built around the Daugava river, with the Old Town on the east bank and the Art Nouveau streets spreading north of the boulevards. The airport sits west of the river in Mārupe, the beach resort of Jūrmala is half an hour along the coast, and the business district of Skanste is a few minutes beyond the centre. Riga International Airport lies at Mārupe, about ten kilometres from the centre. The usual drive is around twenty minutes along the Lidoņu iela and Jūrmalas gatve route, and then across the Daugava by the Vanšu or Akmens bridge. Morning inbound traffic can slow the approach to the bridges. Your chauffeur follows your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and picks the crossing according to live traffic rather than habit.
Vecrīga, the medieval core, has restricted vehicle access and cobbled streets, so a hotel inside it means a drop-off at the nearest permitted point. Beyond the boulevards, Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela hold some of the finest Art Nouveau façades in Europe. The Freedom Monument stands where the Old Town meets the boulevard ring.
