Zagreb is an unhurried capital with a clear shape. The old Upper Town perches on a hill, the Lower Town spreads out below it in a grid of squares and parks, and the newer business districts and the Fair sit across the Sava in Novi Zagreb. Most of what a visitor needs is close, but the connections are not obvious, and the best of Croatia lies a motorway away. Franjo Tuđman Airport lies about ten kilometres south of the centre, near Velika Gorica, and the run in is normally twenty to thirty minutes by Avenija Dubrovnik or the bypass. Peak hours on the approach to the Sava bridges can double that. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board and has already checked the flight, so an evening arrival from Frankfurt or London is greeted when the doors open and not before.
The Lower Town is where most business visitors stay: the square itself, the Zrinjevac park, the Croatian National Theatre and the cafés of Tkalčićeva nearby. Trams run across the square and parts of the area are closed to private traffic, so hotels are served from side streets. The A1 motorway runs south to Plitvice Lakes in about two hours and on to Split in around four; Rijeka lies about two hours southwest; Ljubljana is roughly an hour and a half to the northwest.
