Reykjavík is small, but the country around it is not forgiving. The international airport is fifty kilometres away across a lava peninsula, the best-known sights sit on roads that weather can close within hours, and daylight swings from a few grey hours in December to almost none of darkness in June. Keflavík International Airport lies on the Reykjanes peninsula, and the road to the capital, Route 41 (Reykjanesbraut), takes about fifty minutes in normal conditions. Crosswinds on the open lava fields can be strong enough to slow traffic, and winter squalls arrive with little notice. Your chauffeur follows the flight, meets you in arrivals with a name board and checks the road service forecast before leaving the car park.
