Salt Lake City is unusual among American capitals: an international airport ten minutes from downtown, and some of the continent's best skiing forty minutes beyond it. That makes for two very different kinds of trip. One is a suited run between Temple Square and the Silicon Slopes towers along I-15. The other is an all-wheel-drive climb up a canyon in snow. Salt Lake City International sits northwest of downtown, and the run in along I-80 and I-215 is often under fifteen minutes, which surprises people used to long airport journeys. The terminal was rebuilt in recent years with a single large concourse, so a chauffeur waiting at baggage claim is easy to find. We follow the actual flight, because winter storms and wind off the Great Salt Lake can shift schedules, and the car should be there for the plane that really lands.
