Seville is built for walking and punishes cars that try the same. The old quarter around the cathedral is a tangle of lanes older than the motor vehicle, the river bends through the middle of town, and in the weeks of Semana Santa and the Feria the map rearranges itself entirely. Seville's airport lies about ten kilometres northeast of the centre, close to the SE-30 ring and the A-4 toward Córdoba. In normal conditions the run to a hotel near the cathedral takes around 20 to 25 minutes. The pinch points are the morning flow into the city along the A-4 and the ring road itself at about nine, which can double the time. Your chauffeur waits in arrivals with a name board and has watched your flight since departure, so a late landing does not disturb the pickup.
The heart of Seville is a pedestrian puzzle. Around the cathedral, the Giralda and the Barrio de Santa Cruz, lanes are too narrow for an SUV and bollards control entry to some of them. Hotels there work from agreed drop points, often on the edge of the barrio at Avenida de la Constitución or near the Puerta de Jerez. We tell you in advance where the car will stop and arrange help with luggage for the last few hundred metres on foot.
Business has left the old centre. The Isla de la Cartuja, site of Expo 92, now holds the Torre Sevilla, technology offices and the Pabellón de la Navegación, reached by a handful of bridges. Nervión, around the Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium and the Viapol towers, serves banks and professional firms. No city reshuffles its traffic as Seville does. During Holy Week the brotherhoods' processions close streets across the centre for hours at a time, and the Feria de Abril, held on the fairground across the river in Los Remedios, takes over a whole district for a week. Seville is the best base in the south for a day on the road. Córdoba and its Mezquita lie about an hour and a half northeast, Jerez de la Frontera and its sherry bodegas about an hour south, and the white town of Ronda a little over two hours away. Doñana and the coast at Matalascañas are also an easy morning. Fuel, tolls and waiting are part of the fixed price, and the chauffeur sets the order of the stops to avoid the midday heat.
