Vienna is a compact city with awkward access. The Innere Stadt is mostly pedestrianised, the Ring carries trams in both directions, and Schwechat airport sits southeast of the centre on the A4. Our chauffeurs know which hotel entrances can take a car, where the permit lanes start and how long the Danube side of town really takes. Vienna International sits about 18 km southeast of the centre, and the A4 into town is normally a 25 to 35 minute run. It stops being normal on weekday mornings, when the Simmering stretch backs up, and on Friday evenings in summer. Because we follow the flight, a late arrival from Dubai or an early one from London does not leave anyone waiting at the wrong time.
The Innere Stadt is not somewhere you simply drive to a door. We know which hotels have their own vehicle access and which need a short walk with a porter. If you are staying on the Ring, near the Hofburg or the Opera, the drop is usually at the entrance. Many Vienna meetings now happen outside the old centre. Donau City, beside the UN complex, holds towers, the Austria Center Vienna and a growing list of corporate addresses, and the Reichsbrücke is the usual crossing from the first district. Others are in the Wieden and Landstrasse districts near the Belvedere and the Hauptbahnhof. A chauffeur who has done these runs weekly knows where to wait during a two-hour board session and which entrance a conference actually uses for delegates.
Vienna's calendar changes the roads. From January to Ash Wednesday the ball season fills the Hofburg and the Rathaus with evening dress, and the Opera Ball night shuts streets around the Staatsoper. In late November and December the Christmas markets at the Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn and Spittelberg clog the Ring on weekends.
