Occasions and events in FlorenceThe A1 runs south through the Valdarno, Arezzo and Orvieto to Rome in around three hours. Traffic near Orte and the Rome ring road, the GRA, decides the arrival time. We tell you the realistic duration for your departure hour, and suggest leaving early to reach Fiumicino or Ciampino with margin.
The Appennine section of the A1 between Florence and Bologna has long tunnels and frequent works, so the apparent distance understates the time. Bologna takes about an hour, Milan three to four. For late flights we plan a conservative departure and watch live traffic reports.
A short drive south brings you to Siena, Monteriggioni and San Gimignano. These are comfortable day trips in an SUV, with stops for wine and lunch. Hill-town roads narrow, parking is limited and the chauffeur drops you at the gate while arranging a pickup time.
Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi and the Cinque Terre are about one to two and a half hours away. The summer weekend exodus makes the FI-PI-LI and the Versilia roads heavy, so we recommend a weekday or an early start when possible.
Winter fog and spring rain can slow the Appennine tunnels and the Valdarno. The fare stays the same however long the road takes, and the chauffeur calls the desk if conditions change, adjusting without drama.
Italy's autostrada service areas are better than most, but a long drive deserves a proper meal.
