Mallorca has no intercity trains of note and a bus network built for residents, so a private SUV is the practical way to cross the island. Sóller lies forty-five minutes from Palma, Pollença and Alcúdia about an hour and Port Adriano half an hour. Distances are modest, but the roads are slow in summer, and a driver who knows them makes the difference. The price is fixed in advance and includes tolls. Taxi fares for these distances are high and not always available on the north coast, which is another reason to book ahead.

In winter the tunnel is also the safer choice when mist sits on the pass, and the chauffeur decides on the day.
The Ma-13 north across the central plain leads to Alcúdia and Pollença in about an hour, outside peak times. In July and August the approach to both can queue, especially on Saturdays and Sundays when day-trippers join holidaymakers. We suggest morning departures and tell you honestly when a late afternoon start would be easier on the nerves. Both towns have long beaches and busy centres, and the final kilometres into Alcúdia's old town and port can be the slowest of the whole trip.
The Ma-10 from Valldemossa through Deià to Sóller is among the most scenic roads in Spain, narrow and bendy and shared with cyclists. The chauffeur drives the stretch smoothly, stopping at viewpoints such as the Mirador de Ses Barques. A full run from Palma to Pollença along this road takes much longer than the motorway, so tell us how you want the day to feel. If you prefer to sit back and watch the sea, we take the coast; if you have a dinner to reach, we take the Ma-13.
The lighthouse at Cap de Formentor is a famous drive with a narrow road and a short season for easy parking. Cala Ratjada and the east coast, with the caves near Porto Cristo, lie about an hour from Palma. Summer car parks fill by mid-morning, so a driver who can drop you and wait is valuable. The drive back across the island through Manacor and Algaida is quiet in the evening and gives a different view of the interior, with almond groves and windmills.
