Airport transfers in MilanComo is about an hour away, with Bellagio, Cernobbio and Tremezzo along the shores. Lakeside roads are narrow, and a chauffeur manages the traffic and the parking at the villa or hotel. Summer weekends are busy, so we suggest an early start, and a ferry across from Varenna can replace the longest stretch of road if you prefer to see the water. The ferry timetable changes with the season, and we check it before you leave.
Lugano is about an hour from Milan, via the Chiasso border. Border queues vary through the day, and we plan accordingly. Business visitors use the trip for private-bank meetings, and leisure guests for the lake and the shops. The chauffeur carries the vehicle papers for the crossing and chooses the hour that suits the queues. Chiasso queues are shortest in the early morning and after the lunch hour. Passports are checked.
Turin is around an hour and three quarters by the A4. Beyond it, the Langhe wine hills and Alpine resorts like Courmayeur are within a morning's reach. We plan stops at estates and restaurants on request, and the chauffeur calls ahead to the cellar so that your tasting begins on time and nobody is waiting at a locked gate. Cellars in Piedmont generally close for lunch, so timing matters more than distance.
Genoa is similar in distance to Turin, and Portofino and the Ligurian coast are a little farther. In summer the coast road is busy, and the chauffeur picks the timing to avoid the worst of the weekend traffic. A lunch of focaccia and seafood in Camogli makes a good halfway point on the return towards Milan. Camogli is also a lovely lunch stop for anyone heading down the coast to Portofino.
