From Naples the motorway runs past Pompeii toward Castellammare, then the road climbs onto the Sorrento peninsula and becomes slower. The last stretch can fill in summer, especially on weekends when day-trippers join residents. We suggest leaving early for ferry connections to Capri, and the chauffeur tells you what the road is like before you leave. Many guests stop at a lemon grove or a ceramics shop above the bay on the way, which we are happy to include if the timetable allows it.
The cliff road between Positano and Amalfi is one of Italy's famous drives and also one of its most congested. In summer there are limits on large coaches in places, and a full-size SUV works only where the width allows. North of Naples the Royal Palace of Caserta is about 40 minutes by road, and a morning visit is easy to combine with a lunch stop. South, Paestum's Greek temples lie beyond Salerno, a long but easy run on the A3 and local roads. For longer trips toward Matera, Puglia or Calabria we agree the full itinerary and the overnight arrangements before departure.
