Şile, a small resort with a lighthouse and beaches, is about an hour and a half from Istanbul on the Asian side. It is popular on summer weekends, when the roads through Ümraniye and Çekmeköy fill. We suggest leaving at dawn on Saturdays. For a quieter alternative, the villages of the Kilyos shore on the European side are closer.
