Sofia sits at the head of Bulgaria's best road routes. The A1 Trakia motorway runs southeast to Plovdiv, while the roads south climb to Rila and the winter resorts. Corporate travel in SofiaPlovdiv is about an hour and three-quarters from Sofia, mostly on the Trakia motorway. The Old Town on its hills, the Roman theatre and the artisan quarter of Kapana make an excellent day or a business trip. Cars cannot enter the cobbled Old Town, so the chauffeur sets you down at the nearest practical gate. We wait during meetings or lunch and return you the same evening.
Rila Monastery lies roughly two hours south of Sofia, deep in the Rila mountains and one of Bulgaria's most visited sites. The last stretch is winding and slow behind coaches in summer. Starting early avoids the worst of it. In winter, snow on the upper road can complicate access, and our chauffeurs carry snow chains from November and judge on the day whether the road is sensible.
Borovets takes about an hour and a quarter from the capital, Bansko around two and a half. Both are busiest on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, when queues build on the approaches. We aim to leave outside these peaks where possible and add margin where not. Ski equipment and luggage fit in the SUV together, and families can add child seats free of charge when they tell us the ages.
Road journeys can also continue beyond Bulgaria. Skopje, Belgrade, Thessaloniki, Bucharest and Istanbul are all reachable from Sofia by car, though each involves a border crossing and a long day. We quote these on request, door to door, with the time at the crossing built in. Passengers must carry the documents their nationality requires, and the chauffeur will plan around queue lengths on the day.
